Coastal Protection Agency Area
Nature Reserve
Category(ies) : Pond
For birdwatchers, this combination of ponds, marshes, sansouires and cultivated land is an ideal place for observation. More than 150 species of birds live side by side in this vast 561-hectare wetland between Agde and Marseillan. The Canal du Midi runs through it from east to west. This area originally formed the vast Hérault delta. The area was gradually filled in by alluvial deposits. It was softened by the waters of the Canal du Midi. The low-lying areas have become covered with fine, bright reed vegetation, much appreciated by birds. A free observation point is located on the D51 between Marseillan-Plage and Marseillan-village. The reserve house is freely accessible, but guided tours of the reserve are only available by reservation.
